CLOSED!!
Wow so it was announced today that Stinkers was closed after only about a year in business.
To quote my gf "it was too ironic and kitschy for it's own damn good"

Where strippers go to retire
I've been to Jumbos before with a group containing a number of girls and gay men and nobody felt uncomfortable or out of place. Its weird like that.
[Quick fact: Courtney Love used to dance here way back before Kurt.]
Jumbo's is an experience, there are some serious characters and some er talented tat-laden dancers who clearly have seen too many creepy old dudes and decided to settle down to a place where they can be funny, don't get nude and the crowd draws in rockers and lesbian couples.
If you're a dude looking for a bachelor party this aint it. If you're looking for a freaky dive and some entertainment then this is your spot.

One of the best. Just inconveniently located.
In the cheesesteak wars this place gets overlooked. Best cheesesteak I've ever had.
I discovered this back in the day when I worked with some guys who used to hit it up for lunch once in a while.
It gets skipped in the guides etc since its in a sketchy industrial location. I guess with the Ikea nearby now its not so crappy anymore but still, you've gotta drive there.
If you want a steak from a real place where the locals hit up this is it.

Should be more popular
Royal Clayton's is relatively new I guess. According to the website its been around since 2006 but I just discovered it recently. Its on a weird block carved out of sketchy warehouse district and turned into lofts.
Anyhow its a really cool oldschool-looking British pub at the bottom of a newly renovated loft building with all your favorite beers and a pool table. For some reason its been dead in there every time I've gone in, probably due to inconvenient location. But I feel like it should be more popular - its spacious, not overly expensive and has a good vibe.
I haven't eaten at the restaurant yet so don't know about the food..

Hip wedding spot?
My friends got married here a few weeks ago. It was actually pretty cool since they sold popcorn & soda and sat us in movie theater seats.
So yea I watched a wedding ceremony while munching popcorn.

Heavy awesome food with pitchers of beer
Fast food style restaurant with pastrami, pull-pork, and roast chicken on the menu (and they're GOOD). Belgian fries and a great beer selection with cheap pitchers.
No issues with crazy lines either which is surprising...

Hollywood hipster diner...
...or at least thats how I remember it. (It's been a while since I've been there.)
I used to go to the 101 for brunch with my buddies like once a week (or more) back when I lived in Hollywood.
Lots of hungover actor types mulling about in shades.
The food isn't bad, they have a fried fish sandwich I really liked with sweet potato fries and the brunch menu is pretty decent

Good coffee, mostly interesting for the name
Went to check this place out the other day to get some work done.
The coffee was good, place was clean and had a friendly vibe. A little disappointed by the lack of sufficient table & outlet coverage (a chronic problem with LA coffee shops).
Check out the website and read up on the history of the California Cycle-Way I think thats the most interesting part of this spot..

Doesn't matter what you see here
The Hollywood Bowl is just such a great venue, outdoors tucked away in a canyon and enhanced by the fact that for most shows they let you bring in your own booze and food (even seen someone cut up a whole cake).
I've seen a ton of great acts come through here and some landmark once-in-a-lifetime shows, but honestly if you get the chance to see anything here its always an awesome experience.

First Fridays
OK, I haven't been here during the day before. But from October to June for First Friday they have an awesome party in the Natural History museum with kick ass acts and booze. So you walk around the dinosaurs with your drink while listening to awesome music.
For example Interpol has played here and if you're into indie and electronica its the shit. The museum itself is pretty cool in a nostalgic kind of way, the T-Rex vs Triceratops skeleton fight in the lobby is classic.

Kind of a global chain
Maoz is pretty good, but its like a global chain i mean they have one in philadelphia.
but i guess its true you don't notice much in the way of decent street food going on in amsterdam so it makes sense if you need a bite

Good food. Big crowd.
So yea this is kind of a big tourist attraction for philly. However most of the food there is awesome, however a little pricier than if you got it somewhere else in the city.
And a lot of the best stuff is farm-fresh and brought in every day by Amish people from Lancaster County so that's really interesting.
There's a killer ruben and some excellent cheesteaks to be had.

Deep fried chicken. Waffles with lots of butter & syrup. Alternatively with grits. Its goddamn good shit.

Kick ass huge independent bookstore
The first time I went to Seattle this was the only thing I checked out. Its just a huge awesome bookstore with multiple levels in a cool old building with wood floors and steps etc.
There's a cafe in the basement that back in the day was street-level.
Cool spot.

Mexican restaurant turned hipsterville
Barragan's is a typical large Mexican family restaurant. Very low-key normally with karaoke and a bar. OK but not overly special food, family run and family-oriented.
One day the son of the owners came up with the idea to have a cheap margarita night on Wednesdays and market it to the local scenesters. So now its divey-family-mexican spot most nights and hipsterland on Wed.
For out of towners its a good place to spot your favorite 20-something actors and rockstars, since pretty much everyone in the neighborhood comes out for it...

Not cheap, but a cool location
The Edison is a cool space. Its like an Art Deco decommissioned old power plant (hence "Edison") in Downtown LA renovated as a massive bar / club with intact generators to boot.
Only problem - its expensive as shit and you need to be dressed up and will probably wait in line.
Not exactly a budget travel destination, but if you go real early and aren't dressed like a homeless person they'll probably let you in for a minute and you can sneak back out without needing to nurse an $11 drink...

Awesome concept, delicious food, super cheap
Kogi's Korean Barbecue taco truck is the shit. Its like the future of food.
Basically they take super tasty korean bbq, make tacos and burritos out of it and take their truck around the city where you have to follow their Twitter ( http://twitter.com/kogibbq/ ) or check the website to find out where the truck is going to be next.
(As a web geek I've never heard of any dining experience being so wired so that's amazing in itself.)
The tacos are delicious and only like $2 - the price of a normal taco truck.
Fuckin genius.

Good place to get some work done
Ended up here doing some work on last trip to NYC. Standard issue little coffeeshop.
Chill vibe, free wifi with ample seating, good outlet coverage, very quiet.

Super famous independent bookstore
OK, yes its a major tourist destination. However it still holds up to the Beat Generation independent uber intellectual vibe and has a great collection with 3 (or is it 4?) floors of books.
There's a little area devoted to self published stuff, a spot dedicated entirely to kerouac and ginsberg, a good array of left-leaning magazines and a healthy smattering of social commentary downstairs.
If you like bookstores no trip to SF is complete without it.

Chill oldschool Beat Generation vibe
Its got two floors really cramped some live music and is just generally a really cool little spot that totally holds on to its Kerouac-era roots.

Don't park in the neighborhood...
..it takes up all the parking for the local residents on game day. *Cough*
Now, I'm not a sports fan by any stretch of the imagination but I definitely like Dodger Stadium. For a baseball stadium it has a very chill vibe.
Its WheresCool worthy.

Chill spot
Library like feel on one end, hipster bocce tournament on the other. Decent beers on tap (not crazy expensive either), chill vibe and apparently shows downstairs from time to time. Worth it.

Crazy vibe off-strip hotel
Stayed at the Artisan for two nights coming in from LA.
Definitely not a hotel for everybody, especially typical tourists - its dark with all this classical art stuffed into every corner and a lounge with club music blaring.
Relatively cheap, just far enough between Downtown and the Strip to be convenient, comfy beds and no old people or kids to deal with. Mostly 20-something LA scenesters on a weekend Vegas run.
Oh and FREE PORN 24/7 on channel 69. Fucking awesome
I dig it.
