For all those PB fans (aka everyone)
Who DOESN'T like a good peanut butter sandwich? I don't know about you, but I can never seem to master the perfect PBJ - so I'll let someone else do the carving. PB&C is every juvenile-turned-foodie's dream come true.
Combinations include fried banana and honey, pickles, white chocolate, and even bacon. Sandwiches are made with the largest slices of bread known to mankind, so you WILL be full.
Recommended: The Heat is On. Grilled chicken, pineapple jam and peanut satay on whole wheat ($7.95).

Coolest ice rink in Europe.
If you're visiting in winter, make sure you hit up the ice rink for some serious skating action. European techno blasts as you make loops around the rink or watch the pros do tricks in the middle. Locals love coming out to play as well, this place is a hidden gem. Get in free with your Budapest card, or pay a small fee for skate rental (about $6). Very cool experience indeed.

Swim inside and out, all year round.
I cannot say enough about this place. It is truly bad ass in so many ways. It's cheap, fun, theraputic and an awesome way to spend an afternoon. The hot springs and sulfur baths are good for your skin and relaxing to sit in amongst the old locals who use these baths daily. There are saunas free to use and several services are offered such as massages (2000-3800 HUF) that are awesome AND inexpensive.
The outdoor pools are also seriously cool to play in. There are lap pools and even a whirl pool, and springs that bubble up and massage you. They are open all year round and get crowded in the summer but in the winter it's way cool to take a dip in the warm water surrounded by snow and ice. You could spend a full day here but if you are on a time limit, save your receipt and you'll get some money back if you leave within two hours.

Lovely area.
Great place to begin a tour of Budapest. There is so much to do here, you could spend a full day sightseeing here. Most of the area is City Park, which is so much more than a park because it is dotted with museums, bath houses and other cool things to do as you walk through it. Fantastic area to pack a lunch and get to see a bunch of sights right around the corner.

Gooooood chicken
Awesome wings and chicken dishes, they have so much here, everyone can find something to eat. Local bands, trivia nights and drink specials accompany the atmosphere too. Gets crowded on weekends, there is also a takeout portion if you just want food to go.
RECOMMENDED: Teriyaki chicken salad, fried. There is just something about the way they make it that tastes different from everything else.

The dive bar of dive bars.
One of the cheapest bars in Charleston, popular with the underage and thespian crowds. Sometimes have under 21 nights, but kids flock to this joint for the cheap drinks and mayhem that ensues afterwards. Literally down an alley so don't pass it by on accident. Lots of college kids and teachers, to be warned.

Where the Hipsters hang
This place rolls wicked every night, with cheap drink specials and cool contests to keep the intellectual college crowd happy. You WILL get drunk here. Try your hand at Rapper's Karaoke, Stump the Bartender, Trivia or Guitar Hero nights. The bar is located above Pita Pit so be careful not to pass it by.

Decent Mexican food and drinks.
Cheapest place to eat in town (if you don't mind sitting on the toilet once you're done). Get huge plates of Mexican food and fishbowls of Margaritas for under $5 a pop. Good place to go if you're under age and want to drink, they don't ID. Be careful of the sketch-balls that hang around the back. Big college hang out, fun atmosphere but don't spend to long here if you can help it.

Try NOT to go here if you can help it.
Charleston does not have very many 24 hour establishments. Unfortunately, Gilroy's is one of the only ones. The food is your typical greasy fare - pizza, wings, sub sandwiches, fried delights - and is known to cause massive indigestion but then again, everything tastes better when you're hammered and hungry. Also offer free delivery. The place itself is a shade-fest, so I wouldn't spend too much time there. The food is cheap and available, but only as a last resort.

Late Night Charleston Legend
Although a chain, Charleston's Pita Pit is a legend in its own right. One of the only late night eating establishments in the Downtown area (open until 2am), once the bars close the college kids swarm here for after hours food fixes. The staff are really cool too and regulars are often formed. The food is inexpensive as well and better than subway. Pita Pit tastes way better when you're drunk anyway.

Great beauty shop
For an inexpensive hair cut or some cool cosmetics, head here. Stella Nova is actually made up of three different locations: the Spa, the Salon and the Cosmetics Shop. All are cool to check out. The staff are really helpful and there are tons of opportunities to win makeovers and score free products.

A Grown Up Claire's
Great place to snag some last minute gifts for your girlfriends or mothers, at inexpensive prices. Lots of jewelry and gift sets, also have purses and bags, hair accessories, sun glasses, etc. They often have sales and you can snag some nice items. There are better quality jewelry stores in Charleston but this one is nice for the person who has everything.

Nothing totally special, but good.
Good place to grab a quick bite to eat, lots of combinations to choose from but pretty pricey in the long run for standard deli fare. You could do a lot better elsewhere, but sometimes you just need that plain old deli fix.
RECOMMENDED: The White Moose, provolone and turkey on a whole wheat bun with Groucho's special mustard sauce ($9).

Awesome tapas and fondue.
One of HK's hidden gems, look beyond Kashkaval's take-away counter and you'll find an intimate wine bar with limitless options. Known for their cold, Mediterranian tapas selections, the menu also consists of cheese and meat plates, paninis, salads, a few tasty mains and the crowning glory, fondue. Limited seating causes for a cozy atmosphere and a great place for a first date.
Recommended: The sampler plate of tapas delights. Choose up to five different spreads and dips like tapenade, artichoke dip, taboule and fresh hummus. Serves up to four people for $12.

Come here when the pubs close
Nice place to come for a cheapo italian lunch, better to come after the pubs close because it's 24 hours. Grab some wine and share it amongst friends, the summer is especially nice as you can come in and out as much as you please, be rowdy and no one cares. Little newspaper stand next door open as well for cigs and such. Good to keep in mind when you're looking for somewhere to drink after hours.

Legendary with Kings College kids
Located down the block from Kings College, this pub gets a lot of student foot traffic all year round, especially by Americans in the summer months. Younger folks tend to party upstairs while locals still gather downstairs and outside to watch football matches and smoke. Good place to watch sports, and there are a lot of activities that go on as well like karaoke night and drink specials. Really close to the Thames but not on the tourist track, so worth a pop in.

Cool fucking art.
Park in the shopping center's parking lot and then walk around to the back of the building. From edge to edge there is graffiti by infamous street artist Sheepman, who has made a legend of himself to indie fans across the town. His art is incredibly unique and one of Charleston's hidden gems, go at sunset when the stores close and before the drug addicts set in. Bring your camera, it's really a site to see.

Become a Sweet Transvestite for a night
You have to have a car to get there, but if you can make it out to the Terrace at the first of the month, do it. That's when they hold their famous Rocky Horror Picture Show performance and movie. Everyone gets involved, there are games and you HAVE to dress up. Dress crazy and you might even get pulled up on stage!
All other times, this place shows indie flicks and also acts as a cafe bar, with drinks and light meals to accompany your film. Kind to students especially, the atmosphere is also killer.

Where James Bond would chill
Charleston's oldest pub is hardcore when it comes to underagers, don't even attempt to come to this joint with a fake ID. Businessmen flock the former speakeasy after work hours, and successful 20somethings enjoy the nighttime buzz. Sort of like a gentlemen's club, you're bound to find Charleston's young elite hanging around and therefore you can get to know the right people and Southern circles.

My favorite restaurant in Charleston, by far
If you are looking for a seriously fast, seriously good meal, go to Fast and French (alternately known as Gaulart & Maliclet). The dishes are made fresh and there are specials that change daily. Their soups are especially divine, and there are plenty of "prix fix" items that keep your belly and wallet full. The cool seating arrangements make for interesting conversations with those dining next to you - don't say anything too private, you will be overheard.
RECOMMENDED: Hot Turkey and Brie on a croissant, with a side of soup or salad and a glass of Hibiscus punch ($7.40 for all three).

Beauty is its only advantage
If you are a history or architecture buff, a stroll around this area is a must do. This is the place where all the famous historic mansions and attractions are located. There are also some notable bars, restaurants and museums but since this is the oldest part of the city, you will find it mostly crowded with tourists. Still, worth hitting up if you are one.

Gorgeous house of worship.
I liked this church because it's so different from any cathedral I've ever seen. It's colorful, it's got cool patterns and prints on the walls, columns, etc. It's inviting and not so stern and grim like other European cathedrals. The docents are friendly but speak little English, ask for a pamphlet to guide you through. Drop a coin through the grates before the alter and it is said you will return to Budapest.

Favorite place in Budapest.
This is by far one of the coolest, most beautiful parts of Budapest. The architecture is unique and makes for interesting photos, the views from the turrets are killer, and sometimes there are entertainers with Hawks and things. From Spring to Summer there is a fee but during the winter and after hours the site is free to browse. Definitely worth going here, especially if it's not too crowded - photographer's playground.

Good place for old things
There is a lot to do on this side of the river, but it's very touristy (except in the winter) so time your visit right. Most of the sites are close by to each other, including the spas. There are some fantastic views across the river, as the castle sits on a hill. Really nice area if there are no crowds.

For the vegetarians/vegans but still good.
If you want cheap, hot, amazing veg food, come here. Dishes change daily and are made to order. Order at the counter and bring it to a table, no wait service but then again, no need to tip. Food is fresh, made quickly and of the curried, Mexican and Indian persuasion but excellent all the same. You can buy a meal or all food individually. Great soups, hot meals, smoothies and yogurt/cereal combos.
RECOMMENDED: Curry with Tofu. A huge, whapping plate of the stuff with vegetables, beans and rice and your choice of bread. Totes good.

English Lit and French... I used to love it but I guess everything sort of becomes a drag after a while, haha. That's so specific, do you have to specialise or do you just need a huge knowledge of everything? lol. I guess it means you have a sort of career lined up though, whereas i'm going to be a penniless writer in a very dull, unromantic way...
Hey, you can do a lot with English and French lit! Plus it's a cool conversation starter. I wouldn't say I have a career lined up, but I'll be specializing in fashion and textiles, so we'll see . Are you headed to the USA anytime soon?

Actually, I am probably visiting a friend in NY in July, and possibly also going to Boston, the Carolinas, Florida and LA...so in short yes. But money dependant... and I can't believe you just added Arthur's Seat stuff, that is so crazy, I see it every day, I used to live at the bottom. I always find it so weird when people know Edinburgh...

Hey Kat, I was wondering if you might want to do a full-city write-up for Venus Zine. I am editor of their City Guides section (https://venuszine.com/art_and_culture/travel) and I noticed you've been a bunch of cool places. email me at cityguide-at-venuszine-dot-com
Haha don't worry about it, I can definitely deal with not being top user! Plus I have exams at the minute so not so much time... so anyway what do you 'do' with your life?
