Where the Poetry Slam began

4.0 Stars

The Green Mill is known best as the place Al Capone and his cronies used to chillax their nights away. On all the Mobster City Tours and whatnot, The Green Mill is always a stop. But the history of this place is far cooler than a silly old mobster [looking around nervously].

The Green Mill was also the site, in 1986, of the very first poetry slam ever. To this day, the Uptown Slam, started by Mark Smith ("SO WHAT") continues to amuse and inspire local audiences.

Note to poetry slam haters: these events can actually be quite hilarious, with rhyming poetry skits bordering on sketch comedy. Give it a shot some Sunday, hey?

The Mill is also just a neat place to have a cocktail and listen to jazz and feel kind of "retro."
