If you can squeeze in somewhere on the sand, or happen to go at a time when it's not so crowded, this is a nice spot to just kick back and get some sun. This place could be of particular importance to people who run out of money by their last day of the trip and can't afford to go anywhere else in the city. And, yes, keep your personal belongings close.

The beaches of Barcelona stretch from the city centre at Barcelonetta out to meet the resorts to the north-east, and range from quiet to heaving, depending on the location and time of year. Sure, some of the sand is imported, but it's sand all the same, and the water could be cleaner but it's not disgusting - and in a city with limited open spaces this is the best place to go to get away from the bustle. Though the beaches can be lively, they're always relaxed and a great place for people watching. Around the Port Olympic, there's a busy - if flashy and expensive - nightlife at night, too. Be warned though, as with the rest of the city, robbers are plentiful on the beach, so don't leave your valuables unattended.
