The one thing to do if you come to Grenoble is to head up to the Bastille. Numerous footpaths of varying difficulty lead up from the north bank of the Isere (clearly signposted), taking from 20 minutes to almost an hour (partly depending on your stamina), or you can opt to pay for a ride on the 'bulles', a gondola that soars up from the centre of town to the castle in a couple of minutes. Once there, the views are absolutely phenomenal. The vast panorama of the Alps encircles you, with the city laid out before you. Forests give way to jagged snow-capped peaks in an unforgettable vista that will leave you captivated for longer than you could imagine, even in the bitter cold of Alpine winter. In the warmer months, there are many walks leading into the Chartreuse mountains from here, or just further up the hill to more views at the War Memorial. The field behind the fortress is also a popular place to hang out, sunbathe and picnic.
