I have to start out by admitting that anyone in Philadelphia (or those of you more familiar with the city) will admit that Old City is not necessarily the 'cheapest' hangout within the city of brotherly love. However, I cannot deny that some of my personal favorites of the city lie in this quaint, yet somewhat upscale, part of town. Although located in Old City, Sugar Moms is anything but a typical upscale bar. The atmosphere brings nothing but that of comfort and originality. Connected to and very similar to that of Tattoo Moms, Sugar Moms is wall to wall chalk graffiti and disabled bumper cars. Walking down the spiral staircase you are greeted with a large room dimly lit and filled with artistic and unique personalities. Great mix of people and even better playlist running through their speakers. Liquor, as in most Old City bars, is a little pricy; however, Sugar Moms usually has a decent special running on at least one beer (even if it is Pabst). Nothing too fancy, but very good times.

Watch those cueballs »

Love the string of lights that lines the walls, the cheap beer, the repurposed bumper cars, the games of pool. I've been known to knock a few cueballs beyond the table. Sorry about that, folks.

Sugar Mom's is a good place to hide out from the raucous Old City crowd across Market. And its in the basement of an old sugar factory turned loft building, which is pretty cool.

neat, hidden dive in Old City »

I love this place...hidden in the basement of some nondescript building on a hard-to-find street off Market, Sugar Mom's is a smoke-filled god among dives. Though it offers lots of great beers, all you really need to know about is the $3 PBR pounder. The decor is also a highlight--literally like drinking in a cave surrounded by pool tables, pinball machines and bumper car seating. And lots of cool folks.
