Fellow WheresCoolers will tell you the Willis (formerly Sears) tower is a tourist trap. Judging by the size of the space dedicated to waiting in line for the elevator I would agree they are right.

However we went on a Wed afternoon in mid-november and waltzed past all the exhibits and miles of ropes walked straight to our private elevator, leisurely hung out at the skydeck and had a grand old time, with zero crowds and plenty of room to run around.

It was pretty cool. But I would have hated it if I had needed to wait in line. And $15 is a lot of $$ just to ride an elevator, especially if you have to wait in line for it.

The Sears Tower (soon to be The Willis Tower...fuck that) definitely has a big place every Chicagoan's heart. When I was a kid, I would proudly tell everyone I knew that it was the tallest building in the world. But when it comes to the skydeck, here's the gist of it: yes, you will get awesome views from the top, but do you really want to pay the now $15 fee to ride an elevator?? You'll get better photos of the city from the ground.

Ha, I like the other reviewer's suggestion to spend your Sears Tower elevator fee on booze at the Hancock's Signature Lounge. Wise, my friend. Yeah, don't fall into this tourist trap.

I must admit: I am abnormally obsessed with the Sears Tower, but for visual and iconic reasons that certainly do not necessitate a ride to the top. Here's what you do: read up on the story behind the design of the tower (the concept was conceived in a meeting where one of the architects' cigarette packs fell sideways on the table and the way the cigs slipped out haphazardly was a sudden inspiration ... or something like that), then go ANYWHERE in the city and take photos of it. Chicago is flaaaaaat, you can see the Sears Tower from anywhere. You can also take funny posed pictures of it (I'll upload one of my personal faves).

So yeah, show love for the tallest and coolest building in the Middle-west. Just don't pull out your wallet.

Everyone knows the sears tower - it's that building that kind of looks like someone built a hand with its middle finger sticking up, but out of blocks. There's a skydeck where you can see views of the city from the 103rd floor, but for $13, I don't think this is far from extortion. If you have to see a city view, go to the 95th Floor Signature Lounge at the John Hancock Tower where you can at least spend that $13 on booze.
