Before you go up there... »

My experience at La Sagrada Familia was going really well until the woman in front of me (on my way up to the tower) started hyperventilating and complaining about claustrophobia. Just a word of caution: once you are in that line to go up, the only way to get back down is to finish the climb and head back down the other set of steps. Slapping the walls and sucking air from every super thin medieval style window along the way is not going to make time go any faster for you or the people behind you! Anyway, there are tons of intricately carved figures at the base of the cathedral to keep you occupied while your friends see the sights from above.

There are some buildings in the world that just have to be seen to be believed, and the Sagrada Familia is definitely one of them. Nothing can prepare you for the insane detail of this over-the-top art nouveau extravagance that rests far from finished a century after Gaudi's death. The sheer scale is mind-boggling, and the projected plans for it on completion found in the basememnt museum) are more spectacular than your wildest fantasies. The strange sensation of being in a massive church, outside, in a construction site, a place of worship and a work of art all at once is pretty immense too. The queues to climb the tower are very long, but the views over the Sagrada Familia and the rest of the city are pretty phenomenal.
