Find a Quiet Spot... at Navy Pier »

Everything on the south side of the pier is expensive. Most is meant for kids. Everyone says this. Everyone knows this. Run the funhouse maze or go in the children's museum? Way expensive. Take a cruise? Sure, if you want to be overcharged with laughably "open" bars. Shopping? Don't kid me.

Lost in the primary-colored noise are the places on the pier that no one goes: the north side and end of the pier. The north side is where unused boats dock and utility vehicles drive. It's quiet and stares out at Olive Park (try going over THERE for some scenery). The end of the pier is the gem though: it has a beautiful, underused ballroom and the black-iron anchor of the decommissioned submarine U.S.S. Chicago. Sit on it. Get a picture with it if you are so inclined.

Once in a while, I ride my bike down to the end with a camera and a book. Maybe a radio if the Cubs are playing. At that point, it's you, the wind, and a few brave tour groups who will ask you to take a picture for them. Don't worry: they will be gone after they get the shot in front of the anchor, and you can have the wind back.

Navy Pier will be in the first few pages of every Chicago guidebook- right there in the "Must See" list. Here's the truth about Navy Pier: If you don't have children and you don't have hundreds of dollars to burn, it sucks. Navy Pier consists of these things: a ferris wheel, boats, overpriced food, suffocatingly large crowds of tourists, an IMAX theater, and bad shopping. Oh, and a huge stained glass exhibit(??) Whenever I take out-of-towners there, I immediately regret my decision because after an hour of being there, I remember how little there is to actually do. The only thing that is MAYBE worth doing is seeing the fireworks during the summer...but does anyone really care about fireworks that much? Screw the guidebooks- Navy Pier just ain't good.
