this spot is important to me. i've been here so many times, yet get lost on the way every time. i must say, there are not many things more special than fairly authentic, good-as-hell soul food prepared by latinos and served by lower east side skinny hipsters. if i had 3 last meals in manhattan, this would be number 2. followed by a cocktail around the corner at julep <see review too>

Mama's operation sort of reminds me of my own mama. After I turned 8, there was no more coddling - I had to get my own food, reheat it myself, and then scrape my plate into the garbage. Luckily I don't have to do dishes at Mama's Food Shop, but the concept is the same. Great comfort food that is hot if you get there in time, but if not, just throw it in the public access microwave and it's usually fine. The fried chicken and mac n' cheese are standouts.
