I wanted to couchsurf in SF but my travel buddy wanted our own accomodation. Element was the perfect compromise. Central to everywhere we wanted to be, and not terribly stringent on guest or alcohol rules (the contract thingy said neither were allowed, yet we skated through easily with both).
Rooftop/view was beautiful, once we unjammed our window to get to the fire escape. Kinda bummed we missed the complimentary breakfast but that gave us a chance to brunch elsewhere.

Staying in a swank hotel is not the way to do San Francisco. I believe whole-heartedly that you should find some grimey hostel and share a room with perfect strangers.

That is how I justified the fact that we were broke and thus force to stay in Elements Hotel. But after all is said and done, I am glad we did.

It feels safe enough once you enter so that is not an issue. Our room was shared with only two other people. And the bathroom was ample enough for us all. I have been to 'nice' hotels that don't serve as good of a breakfast as Elements did. My favorite part, the view from the rooftop which is accesible from all the rooms.
