The sit-down spot next door is ALWAYS packed. Skip it and grab a Sanwhich Cubano and a corn with a Mexican coke.

i don't know what to say about this place. this used to be my #1 hang out spot. the staff is super sweet and super sexy and frequently changing, so if you make a pass at a waitress and fail, chances are she'll be replaced within three months. one of the last spots in the lower east side where you can still feel like a real bowery bum. the rumors are true about the corn. the place sometimes looks like a scene from DEEP THROAT with the way people finish these off. often crowded but you can beat the rush if you stop by before home on your weekend walk of shame.

You could take your corn and most delicious sandwich ever to go, but then you would miss the fun of waiting for 30 minutes and eventually getting crammed into a table, which is half of the fun of going in the first place. Some of the best drinks ever, sufficient people-watching, and lots of dreamy hungover people eating corn.

I moved back to TX and now I miss Cafe Habana! The corn is beyond amazing and well worth the effort of getting it. Nothing like stopping in for a midday treat.

lives up to the hype »

Cafe Habana really tests your desire to eat there. First there's the half-hour wait on most nights. Then there's the lighting so unambient that you probably wouldn't want to bring a date here. Then there's the seating space so cramped that not only are you up in your neighbor's business, you can't hear much of what is being said at your own table because of the general noise all around. But I find all of this worth it for some of the best, most affordable cuban food around. Make sure you order the corn too - I swear, they must put crack in it.

If you don't have the patience to wait or don't want to deal with such cramped eating, there's a takeout window next door that offers their famous corn, as well as sandwiches, burritos, and a few things off the menu. And don't forget to pick up a copy of the Habana Girls calendar, a totally kitschy wall calendar featuring waitresses in come-hither poses atop cars, in front of fencing, etc. Proceeds go to charity.
