Description:
While rent isn’t as cheap as it used to be, it’s still an easy life in Portland, Oregon. Everyone seems to get by working only a few hours a week as a dishwasher at a hip greasy spoon. This leaves plenty of leisure time for band practice and craft night. Just putting on your goulashes and braving the rain is enough to give the average 20-something Portlander a sense of accomplishment. And this feat doesn’t go unrewarded: Pabst Blue Ribbons all around at the local pirate or eighties-themed dive bar.
The weather plays a big part in the city’s overall mood. Nine months of gray drizzle fosters a culture of artisan beer drinking and coffee consumption. When summer finally rolls around, the atmosphere changes drastically. The streets are suddenly filled with sweaty bicycle riders and the parks with merry picnickers rejoicing in the sunshine. Downtown, bathers crowd the public fountains and Powell’s is nearly empty. People don’t feel like jumping off the town’s many bridges anymore.
