Whilst the world talks about its showy coastal rival, the inhabitants of Madrid are happy to sit back and smile knowingly. They don’t need to boast: Barcelona may have more tourists, but Madrid is Spain’s beating heart and steamy soul. A cosmopolitan mix of people crowd the colourful streets and endless tapas bars and world-beating nightclubs make the city a heady, never-ending party.

There is of course far more to Madrid than its tempestuous night-time incarnation: by day, you can stroll along its elegant avenues and lose yourself in its ancient streets, admiring centuries of architecture along the way. As with any great capital, there are sights, squares, and shops by the bucket-load; the icing on the cake are the Mardileños themselves, gregarious, diverse, and driven by an innate desire to have a seriously good time. This is reflected in the many neighbourhoods of the city - each has its own unique flavour, but wherever you go you are guaranteed to find delicious food, fine wine, cheap beer, music and dancing.
