Description:

Edinburgh, Scotland’s ancient capital, has long been a popular tourist destination, with its gothic spires and winding lanes, graceful Georgian terraces and celebrated international arts festival, crowned with a castle that towers above all. But whilst its conventional attractions might be obvious, there’s far more to twenty-first century Edinburgh than historic architecture and tourist sites.

Every August, the Festival and the Fringe bring cutting edge art, theatre, comedy and music from all over the world to the city, and every available space becomes a venue. During the rest of the year, as well as an impressive range of galleries and museums, there is still a lot of cool stuff to find. The main strips of Princes Street and the Royal Mile might be depressingly full of identikit chains and tourist tat, but explore a little and you will be rewarded.

Amongst Edinburgh’s narrow back streets and in its less-visited neighbourhoods, there are a whole host of treats: funky bars, old world pubs, a burgeoning alternative theatre and art scene, as well as a handful of quirky independent shops and underground clubbing venues. Just remember to wrap up warm.
