Description:

Given its proximity to New York, Boston does have sort of a kid brother complex. Newcomers to town will find that their constructive criticisms about the city's public transportation and Puritanically-criminal early closing times are met with a simple, "then move somewhere else." But what can you expect from people who are perpetually deprived of sunlight for more than half the year? Get past Boston's cranky exterior and you'll be rewarded.

From live-work spaces in former rum distilleries to screenings of hard-to-find films at regal archives, there's a whole bunch of hidden gems. It seems everyone you know is either in school, in a band, or both. The tens of thousands of students who pour in to get their college degrees ensure that even if lifers aren't interested in innovation, there's going to be new blood around. It's either the biggest college town or the smallest city on the East Coast, that's for damn sure.
